  • Dear Shell,

I plan to install a hardwood floor in the kitchen of my home. Do I have to remove the existing linoleum before I do this? Also, do you recommend laying a layer of black building paper before putting the hardwood down? I always enjoy your show.

    Thanks, Brian

    Dear Brian,

I presume you are planning to install the staple or nail down type of hardwood flooring. You may have particle board under the vinyl floor and if this is the case the vinyl and particle board must come off. After removing the vinyl and K-3 board secure any floor squeaks with wood screws, apply # 2 saturated tar paper and the hardwood flooring.

    It’s just that easy.
