- Replacing carpet and linoleum with laminate flooring

Dear Shell,

We are replacing the carpeting and linoleum in the entrance, hallway, family room and kitchen. It is an 8 year old rancher on a cement slab. We would like to replace it with a laminate flooring. It is a high traffic area we have a large dog and occasionally there is a wheelchair on it. What is the good, better, best in these floors? What do you know about a product called Uniclic? Is it better to have a glued floor as opposed to locking laminate?

Dear Mark,

Depending on the quality, laminate flooring will serve you well in the rooms you outline with the type of traffic you describe. Let me rate them in this manner: Good $2.00 to $2.75 per square foot, Better $2.75 to $3.50 per square foot, Best $3.50 to $5.00 per square foot. You will find the non-glue types are in the “best” range i.e. Uniclic and Alloc. If applying to concrete substrate you must apply 6mil poly overlapped 6” at seams to stop any moisture from wicking up through the concrete and into the laminate floor.

It’s just that easy.
