![]() - Cleaning railway ties for home yard use |

Dear Shell, I purchased some used railway ties and have used them as a border for a flowerbed. On a sunny day, some of the creosote in the ties oozes upward and if you step on the ties when cleaning weeds in the flowerbed your shoe bottoms become black. Is there some type of stain or coating that can be applied to the railway ties to keep the creosote from oozing out? Thanks, Darryl Dear Darryl, Give the ties a good scrubbing with paint solvents using a soft brush (a paint brush will do). After scrubbing wash with my Shell Busey’s Home Cleaning Formula (heavy duty mix) and rinse well. Apply an exterior no bleed primer (normally lacquer / shellac base) it dries fast. Then apply exterior acrylic latex best quality paint. It’s just that easy. Article courtesy of: Shell Busey |
