  • Dear Shell,

Can you use plastic (heavy) in place of roofing paper when replacing shingles on roof? If not why?

    Thanks, Carla

    Dear Carla,

Absolutely not – Never use plastic over a roof deck before applying roofing shingles. This will harbor moisture. Why? Your roof structure must have a breathing feature: tar paper will give you that feature. Use minimum #15 felt over entire area before applying shingles.

    It’s just that easy.
