  • Dear Shell,

I have recently built a good neighbor fence using cedar. Should we stain? I have heard different opinions. By not staining, the fence will turn gray. Is that correct? Would you recommend staining? Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Sharon

    Dear Sharon,

To solid colour stain or paint a cedar fence it is very important to apply an oil primer or stain sealer first. This seals the cedar stopping any tanning (yellowing) from taking place. The final coat can be water based acrylic latex stain or paint. These can be applied by roller, brush or spray. Good luck.

    It’s just that easy.
