  • Dear Shell,

I want to tile the back splash area in my kitchen, which is currently just painted drywall. Do I have to remove the drywall and put in a plywood or cementitious backer for the tile, or can I just tile right over the drywall?

    Thanks, Dave

    Dear Dave,

Wash the wall surface using my Shell Busey's Home Cleaning Formula (heavy duty mix) and rinse well. Apply two coats of interior alkyd fast dry primer. Apply ceramic tile using ceramic tile adhesive. To simplify installation, lay out the pattern of tile first before starting. Cutting of tiles for corners, caps etc. is best to be done first before starting your project.

    It's just that easy.
